How Do We Stop the Oil Well from Leaking?

NUKE IT!  While the option is not seriously being considered by the U.S. government, it is just one of many ideas that has been suggested since repeated failed attempts by BP to cap the well.

Apparently, the Soviet Union successfully used nuclear blasts decades ago to seal runaway gas wells, using the heat of the blast to melt the rock and seal off the wells.  In the Gulf, the detonation of a nuclear bomb could hopefully create a similar effect.

However, top U.S. officials have rejected the idea.  For one, the detonation of a nuclear bomb in the Gulf would violate arms treaties signed by the U.S. throughout the decades.  But equally as important are the unknown effects of radiation on the environment and other risks associated with using such a powerful weapon underwater.

Nonetheless, the sheer craziness of the solution simply mirrors the desperation of the public to find a fast and effective solution to this never-ending catastrophe.
