Nokia Eco Product Profiles

Posted on June 10, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

The world of technology still remains a dark and mysterious world to the average consumer.  We don’t know how it works but we do know we enjoy what it provides us.  When it comes to the environmental impact of the technology we use, we are probably equally as aloof.  But Nokia has recently taken steps to enlighten us and further its position as one of the greenest technology companies around by introducing Eco Profiles for each of the company’s new products, providing information on the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle including greenhouse gas emissions, material use, packaging, and recycling.

Upon looking at one of these profiles, you might stare blankly at the information presented, or you might question how they made their calculations and wonder just how truthful these assessments are.  Either way, the presence of this kind of information is a critical step to the expansion of public understanding of the environmental impact of their technology usage.  The disclosure of environmental impacts of technology could help pressure other companies to “green” their products, reduce e-waste, and help the public make informed purchasing decisions in the future.

So here’s to Nokia for making hidden information visible.  Maybe we’ll finally understand something about our technology after all.

Be sure to check out their new bike-powered cell phone charger, it looks pretty cool.
